On October 18, Alsa Kurmasheva, editor of the Tatar-Bashkir service of Radio Free Europe, was detained in Kazan. Kurmasheva faces imprisonment for up to five years. Alsu Kurmasheva is an experienced journalist who has long covered the life of various peoples in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan and throughout the Volga-Ural region of Russia. She spoke about initiatives to protect and preserve the Tatar language and culture from the Russian authorities, who in recent years have been putting increased pressure on the Tatars and other captive non-Russian peoples in Russia. Alsou also covered the problems of the Crimean Tatar people after the occupation of the Crimean Peninsula by Russia.
We support Alsou Kurmasheva and declare that with such illegal actions the Russian Federation confirms to the whole world about the lack of freedom of speech, the totalitarian regime in Russia and its dictatorial essence!
The government of Independent Tatarstan in exile calls on the international journalistic community, international human rights organizations, as well as international politicians to intervene in this situation and achieve the release of Alsu Kurmasheva!
Sincerely,
