The environmental issue is the cornerstone in the ideological paradigm of the activities of the Karelian National Movement and the fundamentally vital potential of the Finno-Ugric identity. An environmental tragedy of epic proportions has unfolded in Karelia: the Segezha Group holding, through the hands of local collaborators, carried out illegal logging of relict boreal forest in the Maksimyarvi nature reserve. Environmental activists held large-scale public events aimed at drawing attention to illegal logging and protecting the invaluable wealth of the indigenous peoples of Karelia.
