Mirzoyan’s direct speech: “The draft law on the start of Armenia’s EU membership process was submitted for discussion in the National Assembly as a citizens’ initiative, and now the government must express its position.”
Details: According to him, in recent years, Armenia and the EU have had quite intense and dynamic relations.
“They were very detailed and covered various areas. The EU has repeatedly expressed its strong political support for democracy in Armenia. The EU is involved in ensuring a safe environment around Armenia. By that I mean the deployment of the EU civilian monitoring mission,” Mirzoyan said.
He also mentioned that the EU had expressed that it was ready to support strengthening Armenia’s economic resilience.
“It is obvious that the EU has vibrant democratic traditions, strong democratic institutions, a free competitive environment, a modern economy and advanced education. You, Mr. Prime Minister, also stated in the European Parliament that Armenia is ready to be as close to the EU as the EU considers possible.
“We have also seen signs that this is possible. I mean the beginning of visa liberalization and several other instruments that have been applied or are being discussed with the EU,” the Foreign Minister said.
The Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stressed that the decision on Armenia’s accession to the EU should be approved in a referendum.
After approval by the government, the bill must also be voted on in parliament.
In previous months, as part of the Eurovoice initiative, signatures were collected in Armenia demanding the immediate start of the EU accession process.
