In his first interview, published on 9 May, the newly elected Pontiff condemned the Russian invasion, stressing that it is a deliberate attempt to seize territory, motivated by a desire for power.
“From my point of view, this (war) is a real imperialist invasion, where Russia wants to conquer territory for reasons of strength and its advantage because of its strategic location, but also because of the great value that Ukraine has for Russia in cultural, historical and industrial terms.
This has already been proven; crimes against humanity are being committed in Ukraine. We must pray to God for peace, but I think we also need to be clearer,” the Pontiff said.
The Pope added that “even some politicians in our country do not want to acknowledge the horrors of this war and the evil that Russia is doing with all its actions there, in Ukraine.”
The new Pope Leo XIV strongly opposed the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine
