In New York City, 12-19 November 1967 the First conference of the World Congress of the Free Ukrainians took place.

It united prominent Ukrainian spiritual and political leaders as well as many community organisations. Over a thousand delegates participated representing 17 countries.

In 1993, two years after Ukraine regained its Independence the WCFU  was renamed the Ukrainian World Congress.

In his opening remarks in New York in 1967, Rev.Fr. Wasyl Kushnir, who in the coming days would be elected the first President of the newly formed Congress stated.
