Russian citizen Timofey Morozov, who went on a solo picket in support of Ukraine, was detained in Almaty, the Kazakh service of Radio Liberty/Azattyk reports.
Morozov held a picket on Republic Square, holding a poster that read, “Ukraine will win, Russia will be free.” “I demand a just peace for Ukraine,” he told reporters.
The man said that he had not coordinated his picket with local authorities. According to him, he “feels safe” in Kazakhstan, but believes that “there could be persecution for this action.”
Later, a patrol car arrived at the scene of the protest. The police officers approached Morozov and asked him to stop the protest, after which he rolled up the poster. The Russian told journalists that the police officer asked him if he was a citizen of Kazakhstan. After a negative answer, he told him “not to do that again” and allowed him to leave. However, the police officers soon returned and asked him to go with them.
It is unknown to which police department Timofey Morozov was taken.
