On Sunday, 9 August, the Czech Senate raised the white-red-white historical Belarusian flag to commemorate an event during the 2020 presidential election.
This is stated in the relevant statement, writes “European Truth”.
According to Senate Chairman Milos Wystrcil, this gesture is intended to express support for the people fighting for a free and democratic Belarus.
“Exactly six years ago, the Belarusian people stood up for freedom, democracy, and the right to self-determine their future. The hanging of the historical Belarusian flag on the building of the Czech Senate is a manifestation of support for all those who, despite obstacles and repression, do not give up the fight for a free and just Belarus,” the Senate Chairman added.
On the same day, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga issued a statement on the sixth anniversary of protests against the rigged presidential elections in Belarus.
As a reminder, over the past year, thanks to the mediation of the Trump administration, more than a hundred Belarusian political prisoners have been released, including the most prominent ones, such as Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatsky. At the same time, hundreds more people remain behind bars.
The Human Rights Centre “Viasna” in its material on the 6th anniversary of the suppressed protests speaks of 100 thousand recorded facts of repression (detentions, interrogations, searches, pressure on relatives, etc.). Based on the political motives of the persecution, 4,602 people are considered political prisoners.
In May 2026, the leader of the democratic forces of Belarus in exile, Svitlana Tikhanovskaya, arrived in Kyiv for the first time as a representative of Belarus and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also appointed a person responsible for contacts with the Belarusian opposition.
