We continue introducing our readers to ethnic volunteer units within the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
This time we present the Karelian special forces unit Karjalan ryhmä Nord (literally from Karelian – “Karelian group ‘North'”).
The sad fact is that the number of official Karelians in the Russian Federation is constantly decreasing and is approaching 50,000 people. Below this limit, the people will begin to be classified as “indigenous small-numbered”.
Despite this, even such a small nation was able to find among its sons and daughters enough brave men who not only joined the Ukrainian Defence Forces but also crossed many borders and passed security checks and training. Today, they guard strategically important facilities in Ukraine – in particular, in the Black Sea.
What is important: The “Karelian group ‘North'” not only serves but also debunks stereotypical ideas among the Ukrainian public. They demonstrate that in reality, the Kremlin’s criminal policy does not have monolithic support among the vast majority of the Russian population.
