Azatlyk – freedom – is not just the name of a square in the centre of Kazan, but also the most important word for Tatars. In modern Russia, Tatars have few opportunities to fight for their identity, but there are people who continue to do so, no matter what. This is the premiere of the new Current Time project “Analyze Ethno”. People of more than 190 nationalities live in modern Russia. Different peoples have their own languages, culture, religion, and cuisine. How indigenous peoples live in Russia now and how they try to preserve their own national identity – this is what we tell in our project. In this series, we will meet rappers and producers Yummi Music, organizers of the largest festival of modern Tatar music.
We will meet the director of a school that, despite pressure, continues to teach the Tatar language. We will talk to bloggers who inserted a national Tatarstan insert into their Russian passport or decided to abandon the Russified endings in their Tatar surnames. We will tell you how Tatarstan lives today and how its residents popularize Tatar culture. We tell you more interesting things about Tatars and Tatar culture on the website of the project “Analyze Ethno”. There you will find a playlist of current music, a selection of modern designers, the history of changes to the Constitution of Tatarstan, learn who the Kryashens are and why they do not consider themselves Tatars, and much more.
