The ninth factor of Bashkir independence: persecution of national leaders and national organisations. The Moscow authorities have always suppressed the Bashkirs and their desire for freedom. Any Bashkir who began to resent the oppression by the Russian Empire was subjected to repression. This was also the case 300 years ago, when our Bashkir batyrs were executed or sent to hard labour. The leaders of the Bashkir people, Akhmet-Zaki Validi, Galimyan Togan, Mukhamed-Gabdulkhay Kurbangaleyev, and many others, were forced to leave their native Bashkir lands. Today, the persecution of Bashkir public and political figures continues. The famous Bashkir political figure Ayrat Dilmukhametov is serving a third term. Ramil Saitov is serving a second term. Rustam Fararitdinov and Marat Sharafutdinov were imprisoned, the Bashkort organization was banned, and its first head, Fail Alsynov, was imprisoned for 4 years. Bakhkid and Saiga were convicted in due time, and Fanzi was convicted at another time. Many Bashkir and public politicians were forced to leave their homeland.
