DID YOU KNOW:
• Until 1721, Russia was called Muscovy.
• The treaty of 1654 between Kyivan-Rus and Muscovy was broken by Moscow in 1709 at the battle of Poltava. After defeating the Ukrainians, Tsar Peter I moved in to occupy the eastern part of the Ukrainian state. This, in effect, was the first occupation by Muscovy of Ukraine. 1919 saw the second occupation of Ukraine, this time by the Communist Russian Army, which had been sent to destroy the newly formed independent Ukrainian Republic. The western part of Ukraine was occupied for the first time by Russia in 1939, when Russia and Germany together started World War II.
• Russians are descendants of a mixture of Finns, Mongols and a small injection of Slavic blood. For centuries, their country was regarded as backward.
• Ukrainians have evolved from ancient, prehistoric peoples. Therefore, Russia’s claim to a common history with Rus’ (Ukraine) is false and invalid.
• Until 1914, Russia called its capital by the German name of Petersburg.
