The vigorous struggle against the Nazis and their security services lasted from early 1943 to the fall of 1944. The Nazis conducted three large-scale anti-insurgency operations (April and June 1943 in Volhynia and Polissia; July 1944 in Galicia and Prykarpattia), but none led to the complete destruction of the UPA, which by the summer of 1944, already numbered up to 40,000 fighters. According to the most accurate estimates in national historiography, the UPA and armed units of the OUN-B conducted 2,526 anti-German actions in 1943–1944. As a result, 12,427 Germans and their allies were killed, 2,047 wounded, and 2,448 captured. In the fight against the German occupiers, the insurgents’ losses were: 2,251 killed, 475 wounded, and 536 captured.
