The federal centre’s policy toward the resource-rich regions of Siberia, the North, and the Volga region is overtly predatory. Under the slogans of “state interests,” environmental standards at extractive industries are ignored, leading to catastrophic pollution of rivers, soils, and the destruction of indigenous peoples’ traditional habitats. Moscow views these territories exclusively as a raw material appendage to finance the war machine, leaving locals with nothing but ecological disasters and social impoverishment.
