Strange symptoms that appeared en masse among residents of the Shelkovsky district of Chechnya became known in 2005. The first cases of the disease were recorded on 24 October, when eight students from a school in the village of Staroshchedrinskaya were taken to the district hospital. The disease was accompanied by suffocation, fainting and hysteria. On 23 December, the peak of the disease occurred – 81 cases of “poisoning” with similar symptoms were registered. In Chechnya, all schools in the Shelkovsky district were closed for 2 days due to a “mysterious” illness in children. “On 19 December, schoolchildren from the village of Shelkovskaya were admitted to the Shelkovskaya hospital with poisoning of unknown etiology,” Prosecutor of the Chechen Republic Valery Kuznetsov told the Ekho Moskvy radio station. All sick people are girls, young women and adult women. The head of the Shelkovsky district administration, Khusein Nukhaev, suggested that the incident was related to the use of a gaseous agent. “Unfortunately, this is not the first case of the poisoning of children in the Shelkovsky district: similar facts took place in September and October,” noted the republic’s prosecutor Valery Kuznetsov. This is how Anna Politkovskaya describes these poisonings in her article DIAGNOSIS TO BE SECRET, PATIENTS TO BE CONSIDERED MACHULANTS – 2.
Throughout December, reports came from Chechnya about mass poisonings of teenagers and staff of several schools in the Shelkovsky district. December 16, 21, 22, and 23 became the peaks of this strange disease, which does not fit into any framework previously known to medical science. The unfortunate ones, whose number exceeded a hundred (the official data on 92 sick people cannot be considered correct, since many families refused to register “their” patients), suffered from convulsions, suffered from suffocation, fell into a coma, and suffered from severe headaches and muscle pains. On December 16, a government commission was created in Chechnya “to determine the causes and eliminate the consequences.” It included military and civilian toxicologists, representatives of forensic psychiatry, and officials. For about a week, members of the commission studied the situation and wrote terrible reports about unknown poisonous substances, allegedly planted by unknown villains in school women’s toilets, but on 23 December, everything changed (the poisoners from the FSB were afraid that they would contact them and had to call the commission): the commission completely dismissed the version of poisoning and an unexpected official verdict followed: “mass psychosis” due to the long-term ongoing stress of wartime (unreasonable nonsense). The population was asked not to adhere to the version of poisoning, not to be nervous and to listen less to journalists… Meanwhile, the patients remained where they were. In hospitals and homes. Experiencing several severe attacks per day. The overwhelming number of poisoned teenage girls and young teachers continue to suffer from the consequences of the December tragedy, they are not treated with anything, there are no medication regimens and there are not even attempts to provide such regimens to doctors in hospitals and local clinics in the Shelkovsky district. “Strange” patients do not understand what will happen to them next, their families are in a panic.
Parents in the villages of Starogladovskaya, Shelkozavodskaya, and partly in Shelkovskaya refuse to let children go to classes, demanding detoxification of school buildings (no one there believed in the version of “mass psychosis”). But there is no detoxification, because there were “no toxins,” insist members of the official commission. The doctor at the Shelkovskaya Central District Hospital, Jamilya Khalilovna ALIYEVA, reminds us that the same thing, only on a smaller scale, has already happened in their area. In September and October 2005: – On 23 September, 19 children and one teacher were brought with similar symptoms from a school in the village of Staroshchedrinskaya. We saw the same strange laughter, hallucinations – a terrible picture… Parents carry children in their arms, but they cannot stop – they laugh.
