The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs has begun dispersing protests near the Parliament building.

Source: Georgian edition of Radio Liberty

Details: Radio Liberty reported that police used a water cannon on Chichinadze Street, adjacent to the Parliament.

Before the dispersal, clashes occurred between police and demonstrators.

Radio Liberty stated that police used pepper spray, while protesters threw eggs and other objects at law enforcement officers.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs claimed that the protest exceeded the legal limits established by the law on assemblies and demonstrations.

Videos of police detaining protesters have been largely published on social media.

According to Georgian media, journalists were injured during the dispersal and arrests.

Background:

  • Citizens in major Georgian cities took to the streets on 28 November, protesting against the ruling Georgian Dream party’s decision to halt the country’s EU integration process until the end of 2028.
  • Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili joined protesters in front of the parliament building in Tbilisi after protests erupted following the government’s decision to “suspend” EU accession talks.
