“Our analysis shows that Azerbaijan wants to start military operations in some areas of the border with the prospect of turning the military escalation into a full-scale war against Armenia,” Pashinyan said at the government meeting.
According to the politician, this intention “can be read in all Baku’s statements and actions.”
The newspaper notes that Yerevan is concerned about Azerbaijan’s autumn successes in Nagorno-Karabash, which could prompt Baku to create a land corridor to its exclave of Nakhchivan.
Armenian-Azerbaijani relations
The main point of tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan was Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict in this region has been going on since the early 90s of the last century.
In September 2023, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense announced “local anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh following claims of provocations by Armenian forces.
In the end, on 20 September, the unrecognized “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic” agreed to the terms of Azerbaijan: the hostilities must stop, it is also about the complete disarmament of the Karabakh army and the withdrawal of heavy equipment from the territory of the unrecognized republic.
On the evening of 20 September, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced the completion of “anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, the country fulfilled all the tasks and restored its territorial integrity in one day.
At the end of September 2023, the president of the unrecognized “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh)” Samvel Shakhramanyan signed a “decree”, according to which the “republic” ceased to exist on January 1, 2024.
