The National Security Service of Armenia announced that it had exposed an attempt to “usurp power based on a prior conspiracy”, which among other things, the participants were preparing in the Russian Federation.

Details:  The Armenian secret service claims that a group of people recruited Armenian citizens and former residents of Nagorno-Karabakh to seize power in Armenia and receive approximately 220,000 Russian rubles, in monthly compensation, during 2024.

They did it under the pretext of a “three-month meeting” in Russia and “familiarization with new types of heavy weapons”, and then being on combat duty after returning to Armenia.

Recruited Armenians were taken to Russia for training at a military base called “Arbat”, where classes were held on “fighting in a closed room, inside a building, with weapons already known to them.”

“In addition, they were informed that the goal of the exercise is to return to the Republic of Armenia and eliminate the current government, thereby voicing calls to cleanse and save the Republic of Armenia,” the Armenian special service said in a statement.

Some of the recruits opposed the seizure of power in Armenia and returned home.

“Criminal prosecution has been instituted against seven persons for committing the said act. Three have been detained, four are wanted,” the National Security Service of Armenia claims.

It should be noted that the exposure of the alleged coup attempt became known at a time when Yerevan – until recently Russia’s closest ally in the South Caucasus – is gradually moving towards the West, accusing Moscow of its inability to protect Armenia from Azerbaijan.

Recently, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, stated that Yerevan has too many questions for the Russian-controlled Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and sees reasons to consider it a threat to its statehood.

He also did not rule out that  Armenia will take a course to join the EU if it sees real chances for it.
