The Lithuanian President’s Chief National Security Advisor, Deividas Matulionis, stated that Lithuania expects that if Russian provocations create a critical security threat, NATO will deploy additional air defence forces and assets in the country.

Details: Matulionis assured that NATO is seriously heeding warnings about the increasing risk of Russian provocations in the Baltic region and other parts of Europe in the coming months.
“We have issued a warning and the alliance is taking this very seriously. If all indicators indicate that the situation is critical, I do not doubt that additional forces and air defence assets will be allocated,” he said.
Leaders on NATO’s eastern flank have recently issued public warnings, citing intelligence indicating that Russia is preparing provocations on their territory. In Lithuania, authorities have identified critical transport and energy infrastructure as potential targets and have recently increased security at these sites.
Matulionis noted that provocations may intensify as the State Duma elections approach and take various forms – from so-called “foreign flag” operations aimed at shifting the blame to Ukraine, to acts of sabotage similar to those observed in Europe in recent years.
He added that the threat extends not only to the Baltic countries, but also to other states that provide strong support to Ukraine.
At the same time, he dismissed the possibility that Russia was preparing to invade the territory of a NATO member state.
“There is certainly no information about the accumulation of troops on our border, so the question of a military invasion is excluded. The probability of this is practically zero,” Matulionis said.
Let us remind you:
- Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski previously suggested that Russia could organise a “false flag” operation using Ukrainian-made drones.
- And Latvia has strengthened the protection of critical infrastructure due to possible provocations by the Russian Federation.
