A native of Kalmykia, Igor Sandzhiev, who fled from a military unit in Russia during mobilization, applied for protection in Kazakhstan. Earlier, a local court sentenced him to six years of probation and deportation to Russia for illegally crossing the border. The authorities of Kazakhstan refused to grant asylum, now Sanjiev is challenging the refusal in court.
“In Kazakhstan, political asylum is granted only by the president, practically no one applies for him. We applied for simple asylum. The authorized body itself refused it, we appealed the refusal. Now we have filed a lawsuit,” said Denis, Deputy Director of the Kazakhstan Bureau for Human Rights Jivaga. The human rights organization represents the interests of a native of Kalmykia in court. The interlocutor specified that until the final decision is made, Igor Sandzhiev remains at large, he lives in Uralsk.
Igor Sandzhiev received an invitation to the draft board in September, almost immediately after the announcement of mobilization for the war against Ukraine. Sandzhiev, who worked at the construction site, was called “to verify data” on military registration. Upon arrival, he was immediately put on a bus and, along with other mobilized people, was sent to a military unit in Volgograd. He escaped from the military unit in order to obtain refugee status in Kazakhstan. The reason was his “differences” with the policy of the state and “pacifist views.” Sandzhiev did not want to take part in the war in Ukraine.
