Russian agents are deceiving Indian citizens into joining the war: they are promised jobs as security guards, and then their passports are taken away and they are sent to the front lines. The BBC told the stories of two Indians who managed to return back
In March 2024, Indian intelligence agencies said they had uncovered a “major human trafficking network” in which young Indians were lured to Russia with offers of high-paying jobs, after which their passports were confiscated and they were sent to military training and then to the front lines in Ukraine. Indian media wrote that about 100 Indian citizens could enter into contracts with the Russian army.
The BBC spoke to two such Indians who were able to return to their homeland. In India, they lived in the state of Kerala and worked as fishermen. They were lured to Russia by deception, promising work as “security guards” for a lot of money for an Indian province – 200 thousand rupees per month (about 220 thousand rubles).
