The Council of the National Republic of Belarus states that the action organized in the Republic of Belarus on 25 February 2024 by the illegal pro-Russian regime of Lukashenka has nothing in common with legitimate elections to a legitimate body of legislative and representative power.
Parliamentarianism in Belarus existed only for a few years in the first half of the 90s and was destroyed when the pro-Russian protégé Lukashenka came to power. It was on Lukashenka’s order that deputies of the Belarusian National Front were beaten in the Parliament Hall in April 1995, and in November 1996, with the direct support of the Kremlin, Lukashenka staged a coup d’état, breaking the Constitution and establishing a regime of one-man rule.
Since then, the fact that the Republic of Belarus is considered a legislative and representative body is a mockery of the very principle of parliamentarism because the so-called deputies are not elected in free elections and are completely subordinated to Lukashenka and his special services. For this reason, no laws and no international agreements adopted or ratified by this unconstitutional body can be considered legitimate.
This year’s so-called elections took place during the actual occupation of Belarus by Russia, under conditions of total terror and complete elimination of non-governmental political and public institutions. “Deputies” appointed by the administration cannot be representatives of the Belarusian nation. All resolutions of these “deputies” will not have legitimate force.
The Council of the Belarusian National. Republic is convinced that only in free, democratic, fraud-free elections in a truly independent national Belarusian state, with the presence of public and international observers, the Belarusian people will be able to fully express their will.
