The Council of the European Union has decided to allocate an additional nine million euros from the European Peace Fund to support the Armed Forces of Moldova in modernizing its air defence system. This was stated in a press release from the Council dated June 13.
The money allocated by the EU will be used to purchase short-range air defence systems.
This package, it said, “complements the €41 million in assistance adopted on 4 April 2024, aimed at modernizing the defense capabilities of the Moldovan Armed Forces in the areas of mobility, aerial surveillance, electronic warfare and logistics.”
The country’s Ministry of Defence stated, “Moldova requested this assistance in the context of the risks and threats caused by the war in Ukraine”.
“As part of the assistance, Moldova will receive air defense systems. They will be purchased and delivered under the schedule agreed with the EU,” the Ministry of Armor said in a statement.
Earlier, it was reported that the United States was preparing to send an additional battery of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system with radars to Ukraine. Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said that Washington is looking for countries that would agree to share their Patriot installations with Kyiv.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte proposed purchasing Patriot air defence systems from countries where they exist for further deliveries to Ukraine.
It was also reported that the Netherlands is negotiating with Western countries on the joint assembly of Patriot systems for subsequent deliveries to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated that the country needs 25 Patriot systems with six to eight missile batteries each to completely cover the sky over Ukraine. At the same time, he noted, these systems can be replaced with other analogues that exist in the world.
