The Suwalki Corridor is a narrow strip of territory about 65–100 km wide on the border of Poland and Lithuania. It separates the Kaliningrad region of Russia from Belarus and is the only land route connecting the Baltic states with the rest of NATO territory. The city of Suwalki arose in the 18th century as a trade centre. In the 20th century, the region repeatedly found itself on the line of border changes between Poland, Lithuania, Germany and the USSR. After World War II, a border was formed here, which in the 21st century acquired key strategic importance for European security. After 2014, and especially after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania significantly strengthened the defence of the region. This involves the deployment of NATO troops, air defence systems, modernisation of infrastructure and border engineering fortifications. This is not a solid wall, but a set of measures to deter a possible breakthrough. Military analysts consider the Suwalki Corridor one of the most vulnerable points in Europe. If it were captured, Russia could cut off Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from its allies and create a direct land link between Kaliningrad and Belarus. Such a scenario would automatically mean a direct clash with NATO. The Suwalki Corridor remains a key element of the deterrence system and one of the potential points where a local conflict could escalate into a large-scale war in Europe.
