Russian attack submarines have conducted missions around the Irish Sea twice since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This unprecedented move by the Kremlin has forced the UK military to take action to protect British and Irish waters.
This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Bloomberg information obtained from three sources familiar with the matter.
Sources told the publication that the first deployment of a Russian Kilo-class submarine near the Irish Sea, which separates Ireland from Great Britain, occurred about 18 months ago. The second case happened recently. According to the journalists’ interviewees, the scale of the submarine’s movement went beyond what British officials had previously seen.
Two sources said US officials were aware of the submarines’ movements. The UK Ministry of Defence said it does not “comment on operations”. A high-ranking official of the administration of US President Joe Biden said that the US is monitoring the activities of the Russian fleet. Press secretaries of the White House refused to comment on the latest reports.
