Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Yerevan invited Baku to sign a non-aggression pact.
As European Pravda writes, News.am reports this.
“We proposed to Azerbaijan to implement demilitarization of the border, as well as a mechanism for mutual arms control, as well as the signing of a non-aggression pact, if it turns out that the signing of a peace treaty will take longer than expected,” Pashinyan noted.
According to the Prime Minister of Armenia, Yerevan has no claims to any territory other than its sovereign territory, therefore it is ready to give such guarantees but expects similar guarantees from others.
Pashinyan added that Armenia offered Azerbaijan several security guarantee mechanisms, for example, a reciprocal withdrawal of troops from the administrative border of the Armenian SSR and the Azerbaijan SSR.
“This border, in accordance with the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1991, became the state border, and on 6 October 2022 in Prague, Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed that they would recognize each other’s territorial integrity on this basis. A reciprocal withdrawal of troops will allow all territories of the Azerbaijan SSR to be under the control of Azerbaijan, and all territories of the Armenian SSR to be under the control of Armenia,” he explained.
Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that the basic conditions for signing a peace treaty with Armenia have already been created, and he does not agree with Yerevan’s desire for guarantors for the treaty.
At the same time, Armenia announced a regression in Azerbaijan’s position on some points of the peace treaty between the two countries.
Progress in improving relations between the two countries comes after the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a joint statement on December 7, in which they announced further steps to normalize relations and establish peace.
The signed statement opens the way to concluding a full-scale peace treaty.
