More than 10 public organizations of North Ossetia in an open appeal to the head of the republic Sergei Menyailo demanded to disclose the number of residents killed in the war with Ukraine and to prohibit the conscription of representatives of the Ossetian people to the front to stop the decline of the indigenous population.
The text of the appeal was published on the Alanya Today Ossetia Telegram channel and on the page of one of its authors, the director of the Tsarazon As-Bagatar Institute for National Development and the head of the Alania Round Table organization, Hadzimat Dzanaity.
The authors write that in July, a “carnival celebration” took place for a whole week, in the main square of Vladikavkaz, which is unacceptable when residents are dying in the war. “Is this kind of “mass celebration” acceptable in conditions when Russia is under mortal threat of physical destruction, the Ossetian people are dying out at an accelerating rate, and the republic is at the bottom of the all-Russian socio-economic rating? It is unclear what kind of Victories you celebrate,” the appeal says.
Its authors called on Sergei Menyailo to fulfill three conditions:
- to inform residents about the number of citizens of the republic who died in the war in Ukraine;
- declare a week of mourning for the victims (according to preliminary estimates, this is about 1,000 people, the authors of the appeal write);
- appeal to Vladimir Putin with a “reasonable proposal” to ban the conscription of representatives of the Ossetian people and the early demobilization of those already at the front.
“In 1944, a similar decision was made by the leadership of the USSR to preserve the gene pool of the small number of nations who suffered significant human losses during the military operations,” the authors of the appeal explain their demand to ban conscription.
In December 2023, public organizations of North Ossetia (almost the same composition) appealed to the people of Alania to unite in unions, councils and public organizations to resist discrimination against Ossetians. In the same appeal, the authors criticized the republic’s leadership for inaction when “a fiery ring of pro-Western forces is tightening around Russia” and advocated accelerating the process of South Ossetia’s accession to Russia.
According to Mediazona and the BBC Russian Service, which are counting the losses of the Russian army based on open data, more than 530 residents of North Ossetia have died at the front. As journalists note, these figures are much lower than the real ones, since not every death is publicly reported.
