Anti-imperial Block of Nations

This date will not be taught in school history or on TV screens. With the announcement of Catherine II’s manifesto of 8 April 1783, which destroyed the independence of the last Nogai state, a project was prepared at the imperial court to deport the Nogais of the Western Caucasus and Ciscaucasia beyond the Urals, as well as to the Saratov and Tambov viceroyalties.

After the imperial authorities began resettling the first parties of Nogais, an uprising broke out in July 1783, in which those who refused to submit and accept citizenship took part. The rebels attacked Russian fortresses and fortifications and made an unsuccessful attempt to storm Yeisk on the Sea of Azov.

The culmination of the uprising occurred on 1 October 1783. Early in the morning near the town of Kermenchik, 12 kilometres from where the Laba flows into the Kuban, in the pre-dawn hours when people were saying morning prayers, General A. Suvorov, the head of the Kuban Corps, gave the order to attack. The troops attacked the main camp of the rebels and completely destroyed it during the battle, taking up to 1,000 people prisoner, not counting women and children. The search for and extermination of survivors continued for several more weeks. As a result of the bloody massacre, according to various estimates, up to 40 thousand people were killed. After the defeat of the main forces, Suvorov at the end of 1783 made an expedition beyond the Kuban against the remaining Nogai detachments.

From the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century, up to 700 thousand Nogais were forced to leave for the Ottoman Empire. 1 kazan 1783 yil – Nogaylardyn kyrgyn kunni. You are not forgotten. Always in our memory
