In this interview with Botakoz Kassimbekova, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Zurich, we discuss the nature of Russia as an empire and the need for its decolonization. Botakoz shares her views on how Russia’s imperialist policies have evolved over the centuries, how this is reflected in contemporary conflicts, and why decolonization of Russia is necessary for the future of the post-Soviet space. We also touch on historical and cultural aspects that help us understand how Russia maintains influence over its former colonies and what are the obstacles to the liberation of these nations.
