“On 17 September 1982, a demonstration of students from the University of Tartu took place in Tartu (Estonia). About 5,000 people took part. The demonstrators protested against the authorities’ refusal to restore the bust of the Swedish king GUSTAV-ADOLF II, the founder of the university, in front of the university building.
The bust was removed with the establishment of Soviet power in Estonia. The Swedish delegation, which arrived to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the university, brought a new bust with them and proposed to install it, but this proposal was rejected.
The demonstrators gathered at the Town Hall Square, sang patriotic songs and shouted slogans against the Russification of Estonia.
On 19 September, the Soviet flag, standing in front of the building intended for foreign guests who had come to celebrate the university’s anniversary, was torn down in Tartu. The white, black and blue flag of independent Estonia replaced the flag.
In September-October 1982, by order of the authorities, the units that allowed reception of television programmes from United Finland (Finnish and Estonian are related languages) were removed from television installations in public places in Estonian cities. This measure has not yet been extended to private televisions. Automatic telephone communication with Finland has also been terminated.
More thorough customs inspections have been initiated to prevent newspapers and magazines from entering Estonia with Finnish tourists.”
