The book tells about the mass executions of the civilian population in Vinnytsia, which were carried out by the NKVD for several years before the start of the Second World War. Mass repressions began in the summer of 1937, and the last ones were recorded in a local prison before the retreat of the Red Army in 1941.
The investigation of these crimes began during the German occupation of Vinnytsia. At the request of the local community and with the sanction of the German administration, an organized investigation of the graves began in May 1943. According to the results of the investigation, 91 mass burials were discovered and 9,439 bodies were exhumed. Local residents recognized 468 relatives among the dead. According to the results of modern research, it is believed that the total number of people repressed during this period in Vinnytsia and the region reaches about 20,000 people.
