Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius has proposed removing the works of Russian writer Mikhail Lomonosov from the school curriculum and including Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko.
He appealed to the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports with a proposal to revise the general education programmes approved in 2022. Sinkevičius noted that Lithuanian schoolchildren should no longer be taught patriotism and citizenship based on the texts of Lomonosov, a writer who glorified Russia’s imperial wars.
In his opinion, Shevchenko’s works would allow schoolchildren to learn about the identity of the Ukrainian nation through the texts that shaped it.
The Ministry of Education reported that Lomonosov’s works are currently included in the programme on the native language and literature for the Russian national minority. The department will consider this proposal and make a decision by the end of August.
