On 7-8 April 1995, during the First Chechen War, one of the most brutal and inhumane crimes committed by federal forces occurred in the village of Samashki.
Hundreds of civilians—women, children and the elderly—were killed during a “sweep” operation. This was not an operation, but a massacre of innocents.
Many survivors were arrested and tortured, after which they “disappeared.” The executioners were never punished.
This is a reminder of the importance of remembering, telling the truth, and demanding accountability so that such things never happen again.
We remember. We do not forgive.
Not to forget nor to forgive. The Anniversary of the bloody purge in Samashki
