The ceremony took place near the memorial cross of the fortress – the place where the leaders of the uprising were shot. Addressing the participants of the event, I. Stanitė-Tolochkienė noted that honouring the memory of the rebellion’s participants has become an annual tradition when Lithuanians, Poles and Ukrainians together honour the memory of the heroes who paid the highest price for our freedom. The Ambassador emphasized that their struggle against Russian imperialism remains an eternal source of inspiration since in our region we have to defend freedom again and again.
The Uprising of 1863–1864 (known as the January Uprising) was a national-social liberation uprising of the former Republic of Both Nations against the Russian Empire in the 19th century. The liberation struggle took place in Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which were occupied by the Russian Empire, as well as in their then ethnographic parts – Belarus and Ukraine. One of the leaders of the uprising, Zygmuntas Sierakauskas, came from the territory of modern Ukraine, from Volhynia, and led Lithuanian rebels with him into the struggle.
