Dear family and friends of Janusz Bugajski, dear colleagues! It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Janusz Bugajski—an outstanding scholar, thinker, and principled defender of nations’ freedom, a long-standing ally of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. On behalf of our Government, we express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to work with him.
Janusz Bugajski dedicated his life to exposing the nature of the Russian imperial system and defending the right to self-determination of enslaved nations. His writings and public speeches—from fundamental research to incisive columns—became a moral compass for those fighting colonialism and aggression. He knew how to call evil by its name and never backed down from pressure.
For the Chechen people, he was a friend whose courage and clarity of thought sustained us in the darkest times. His legacy is the belief that freedom is stronger than fear, and dignity is stronger than violence. Janusz’s books and public speeches helped millions see the crux of the matter: without decolonisation, there will be no peace in Russia or around it.
For us, his name is synonymous with intellectual honesty, solidarity, and personal courage. We thank Janusz Bugajski for his steadfast support of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, for his clarity of moral choice, and for his contribution to the formation of a new post-imperial world order. His ideas strengthen our conviction: the era of empires is ending, and the era of free nations is beginning.
With sincere sympathy, Prime Minister of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria A. Zakayev
