The green field of the flag recreates the mystical depth of the Karelian forests, from each emerald branch of which the whisper of Nature sounds. The black and red cross embodies the symbol of Karelia, which reflects the noble and persistent Soul of the people.
The national emblem reflects the dramatic epic of Freedom and Struggle. Above the Varangian-type shield, with a red and green field, again reminiscent of the depth of the endless forest expanses of the Native Land and the fire of the Spirit burning in the blood of the proud people, the Northern Lights shimmer. The broken chains at the bottom of the shield symbolize liberation from the historical shackles of eastern despotism, and the angry black and gold bear, personifying Courage, holds in its paws a Karelian cleaver – Vesuri.
The national symbols of Karelia went through the difficult trials of the Karelian Uprising (https://t.me/Karjalavapaa/91), sprinkled with the blood of the defenders of the North and went with them to Finland in 1922. Sacred banners and symbols were again raised on flagpoles and shields during the Continuation War era of 1941-1944, triumphantly adorning the valiant divisions that brought hope to the displaced.
To this day, the banner and coat of arms of Eastern Karelia remain silent witnesses of the unquenchable Spirit of the people, surviving the years and resurrecting the history of the Nation!
