Organised by Buryat activists, the event brought together representatives of nations that continue to strive for freedom, dignity and justice.
The discussions focused on the rights of indigenous peoples living under Russian occupation, the forced mobilisation of indigenous men in Russia, and the lack of awareness in the West regarding their situation. Participants emphasised that these communities have been unjustly drawn into Russia’s imperial wars and continue to suffer under a colonial system that denies them both identity and freedom.
Speakers also noted that Russian state propaganda has distorted the image of indigenous peoples abroad, leading many in the West to mistakenly believe that Russia is composed solely of ethnic Russians. In reality, the country encompasses numerous non-Russian nations, each with distinct cultures, languages, and histories.
The forum concluded with a shared conviction that genuine peace and stability in Europe and Asia can only be achieved through the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples, the restoration of historical justice, and the end of Russian colonialism.
Members of the Government of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria attended the event and expressed their full support for the struggles and aspirations of indigenous peoples living under Russian occupation.
On 24-25 October, the forum “Indigenous Nations of the Post-Soviet Era” was held in New York
