A memorable and significant event dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of independence of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria took place in Vienna.
The Representative Office of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria organised the event. Representatives of public and political organisations, ethnic communities, activists, and, of course, the Ukrainian diaspora attended, expressing their solidarity with the Chechen people.
Following the official ceremony, a huge 55-metre flag of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria was unfurled on Schwarzenbergplatz. To the sounds of the Ichkerian anthem, participants honoured this historic day, once again recalling the Chechen people’s aspirations for freedom and independence.
A solidarity rally then took place through the streets of Vienna. Accompanied by the Ichkerian anthem, patriotic songs of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, and songs of the Chechen resistance, cars bearing Ichkerian flags passed through the city’s central streets. Raised high and proudly fluttering, the flags became a symbol of our memory, unity, and striving for freedom.
It is especially symbolic that Ukrainian flags were also flown alongside Chechen flags—as a sign of solidarity and mutual support between peoples defending freedom and the right to independently determine their own future.
For us, this day is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a day of remembrance, dignity, and responsibility to future generations.
Independence is not a gift.
Independence is a struggle for freedom.
Freedom cannot be given as a gift—it is defended through courage, unity, and loyalty to one’s principles. That is why, 35 years later, the idea of a free and democratic Chechnya continues to live in the hearts of those who believe in the people’s right to freedom, peace, and a dignified future.
35 years is history.
Freedom is our aspiration.
Dignity is our path.
And the memory of independence will live on.
