It has been celebrated since Christmas 1020 (yes, Ingria this year – a thousand years and three years), in memory of the wedding of King Yaritslev, also known as Yaroslav the Wise from Novgorod, with the daughter of the first baptized Swedish king Olaf Ingigerda.
This event was talked about in distant Vinland (Newfoundland), Greenland (Greenland) and Great Byarmy (the land of the Pomors), in Norway, England and Normandy.
At baptism, Ingigerda took the name Anna, so she is known to the Orthodox as Saint Anna of Novgorod.
The holiday was widely celebrated in the Novgorod Republic before its defeat, and then it was preserved only in the Finno-Hungarian environment.
We invite all our friends to raise a glass of ale so that next year Ingria Day becomes a state holiday!
