On 30 April, another protest action against adopting the law “On transparency of foreign influence”, or the law on “foreign agents”, which has caused criticism from the West and civil society, continues near the Georgian parliament building in Tbilisi.
This is reported by “European Truth” referring to SOVA.news and “Echo of the Caucasus”.
The action against the second attempt of the ruling party “Georgian Dream” to pass a draft law on “foreign agents” is taking place in Tbilisi for the 16th day in a row. In the hands of those present are the flags of Georgia and the European Union, as well as posters with slogans criticizing the government and hinting at its ties with Russia.
Later, a physical confrontation between the police and protesters took place in front of the Georgian Parliament building on Chitadze Street. Law enforcement officers pushed citizens away from the side entrance to the parliament. A special purpose unit and special equipment were mobilized on the spot.
The participants of the rally, who were there, chanted in the direction of the “Georgian Dream” deputies who were leaving the parliament building: “Russians”, “Slaves”.
Meanwhile, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs called on the organizers and participants of the rally to obey the instructions of the law enforcement officers to “avoid artificial escalation of events.”
According to “Echo Kavkaza”, after the clash, some of the participants of the action went towards the administration of the Georgian government.
We will remind everyone that the legal committee of the Parliament of Georgia supported the draft law in the second reading on 29 April. Its discussion at the plenary session of the Parliament of Georgia may continue for several more days.
On Monday, the EU once again warned Georgia that the adoption of the law on “foreign agents” will have consequences for the process of its integration into the European Union. And American congressmen Jerry Connolly and Austin Scott said that the draft law is similar to “Putin’s anti-democratic tool”.
