The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, vetoed the “Russian” law on “foreign agents”, which caused mass protests in the country.

Details: Zurabishvili said on Saturday she vetoed the “Russian law,” as the law on “foreign agents” is called because of its similarity to Russian legislation.
Zurabishvili’s direct speech: “This law, in its essence, in its spirit, is a Russian law that contradicts our constitution and all European standards and is an obstacle on the European path. The veto is legally correct and will be submitted to the parliament today. The law is not subject to any change, or improvement. This law should be withdrawn.”
More details: However, the ruling Georgian Dream party has enough parliamentary votes to override the veto.
If the president does not sign the law, it is signed and published by the speaker of the parliament.
The constitution does not specify the terms during which the parliament must override the president’s veto.
Presumably, “Georgian Dream” can finally approve the law in mid-June.
Meanwhile, the government said it could consider “substantial recommendations” from Western partners within the veto mechanism.
On May 18, several actions and marches against the law on “foreign agents” will be held in Tbilisi.
What preceded: Mass protests in Georgia against the law, which, according to the EU, does not correspond to the values of the European Union and distances the country from joining the union, have been going on for over a month.
The day before, law opponents did not protest, because in Tbilisi, with the support of the ruling party, a procession dedicated to the Day of the Sanctity of the Family took place.
