There are plans to build a giant colony in the Energetik microdistrict in Ulan-Ude, for which more than 160 hectares of forest will be cut down. Scandals surrounding the construction of an institution for 3,000 prisoners have been taking place in Buryatia for a year. Initially, the colony was planned to be built in the village of Sklozavod in Ulan-Ude, but due to protests, the authorities changed their plans. A new place for construction was agreed in the residential area of Energetik.
The new colony can become a tool for the fight against the indigenous nations of Russia and potential repressions, a kind of repetition of the Gulag. The construction of the colony is directly related to the government’s policy towards the enslaved nations of Russia. This institution can become a tool for repression and suppression of ethnic minorities living in the region.
This project has caused considerable concern among local residents, who have repeatedly expressed their displeasure. Residents of the Energetik micro district are protesting against the construction, as it not only threatens their environment due to deforestation but can also lead to negative social consequences. They believe that having such a large correctional facility in their area could affect safety and quality of life.
Protests from local residents initially forced the authorities to abandon construction in the village of Sklozavod, but the new location was chosen without taking public opinion into account. For example, riot police did not allow people to attend public hearings regarding the colony construction, which caused additional indignation among residents.
The project to build a new concentration camp in Ulan-Ude continues to cause controversy and protests, and local residents are preparing for further struggles for their rights and safety.
