This is an old, well-known, favourite tactic of the “eschniks” (the department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for the fight against so-called “extremism”) for earning stars and titles: create a “cell” – expose the “cell” – get a profit.
It was on this principle that the “eschniks”, together with the FSB, created and promoted fake “extremist” and “terrorist” organizations – “Network” and “New Greatness” in 2016-20. A staff member of the “authorities” entered the chat where young people were communicating, including on political topics, and began persistently suggesting a transition to active action, the creation of an organization, and holding meetings offline; then he wrote the organization’s programme, rented an office for it at his own expense (that is, at the expense of the office’s cash desk, of course) … and that was enough. In the case of “Network,” young people still went out of town from time to time to play airsoft – and the airsoft teams went into business as “terrorist cells,” as witnessed by the provocateur.
In fact, in neither case, were the youth planning anything dangerous for the KGB regime in the Russian Federation, they were not planning to overthrow Putin, they were just playing airsoft or chatting in a chat mentioning political topics. But the sentences given in the “Network” case, as a result of the work of provocateurs, reached up to 18 years, in the “New Greatness” case – up to more than six years…
It is no more difficult to create an ISIS cell than the mythical “Network”. You just get together, declare yourself ISIS, raise the black flag – and start acting on behalf of this organization. You may need to contact someone from the leadership of the real ISIS, report to him, and register your new cell with him. But life for the leaders of ISIS is not easy, they are at war not only with the Americans but, for example, with the Taliban and other Islamist competitors, they hide, live underground, and are on the wanted list… so it is unlikely that the newly-minted boss will come to look at your cell.
Indeed, real Muslims who watched the video message of the “terrorists” had the clear impression that these were some people who were extremely inept at portraying Muslims. This was evident from the manner of speech, from the way they pronounced the word “Allah” through the Russian letter “x” (in fact, there is a completely different letter that is pronounced completely differently – was this the first time they pronounced this word?..), by their strange clothes. The thing that hurt my ear the most was when they said that they would kill the “kafirs”. That’s exactly what they said, with the emphasis on the “i”. People online immediately began joking that they would then kill fermented baked milk and yogurt. Did they read unfamiliar words from a piece of paper?..
General impression: a cheap provocation, in which either non-Muslims or completely brainless idiots who do not understand the consequences are used. It’s not hard to guess who inspired them to do this…
The Islamic State was once created by former Iraqi military and intelligence officers, who have always been in close cooperation with the GRU of the Russian Federation, and before that the USSR. The GRU has long been working in Tajikistan, Syria, and Iraq with Islamic terrorist structures. The FSB is actively working and recruiting them within the Russian Federation to use them abroad or within the country.
Here we are surprised to see how this Afghan-Tajik structure of ISIS almost cooperates with the Moscow investigation. Makes statements when the security officers need it.
