Guess who Hungarian intelligence officers once obtained information for in the European Commission office?
EC representative Balazs Ujvari stated at a briefing in Brussels that the European Commission suspects Hungary’s secret services of spying on EU institutions, based on reports in European media, and is establishing a special group to conduct an internal investigation.
A group of journalists from Germany, Austria, Belgium and Hungary published a highly publicised investigation that revealed that at least several Hungarian diplomats assigned to EU decision-making bodies engaged in activities incompatible with their status between 2015 and 2017.
The investigation alleges that Hungarian intelligence services, operating under diplomatic cover, established a spy network in Brussels for intelligence activities targeting EU institutions and incorporated their employees into this network. At least one Hungarian agent was introduced into the European Commission’s security service.
One of the possible agents, called “V,” could have worked under the direct supervision of the former Hungarian permanent representative to the EU, Oliver Várhelyi. Journalist sources claimed that Várhelyi could not have been unaware that there were intelligence officers in his entourage. He also visited the intelligence headquarters in Budapest several times and made presentations on EU affairs. It was during Várhelyi’s tenure as Hungarian permanent representative that the practice of Hungarian spy diplomats in Brussels took on an “aggressive character,” the investigation claims.
So we have a mirror image of Russia, where almost all diplomats and employees of international organisations work for the intelligence services.
It is already a well-known fact that in the first days of Russia’s large-scale aggression, Hungary coordinated the movement of its troops to the borders of Ukraine with the aggressor. At that time, its goal was to seize Transcarpathia.
Obviously, such cooperation with the Russian Federation is currently ongoing and Hungary is a Trojan horse in the NATO collective security system.
It’s time for Europe to draw a conclusion! Hungary has no place in the European Union and NATO! Ukraine would be a much more reliable ally and a profitable economic partner.
