Moldova has been resisting the influence of the Kremlin for 30 years, and the radicalization of the Russian hybrid war against it occurred after 14 December 2023, when the decision was made to start negotiations between Moldova and the EU. Today, 10 May, on the air of the FREEDOM TV channel, a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, Oazu Nantoi, talked about this.
“The fact is that this aggression has been going on for more than three decades. I am a participant in the events of the perestroika period and I remember how, after the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova on 23 June 1990, the Kremlin authorities launched separatist projects, one of which is the so-called Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, in order to block the transformation process of the former union republic into an independent state. In 1992, there followed an act of direct armed aggression by the Russian Federation against the Republic of Moldova,” he recalled.
According to Nantoi, after the failure of Putin’s blitzkrieg in Ukraine, the importance of the Republic of Moldova has increased.
“Moldova has 1,222 kilometers of common border with Ukraine. Important transit routes pass through Moldova. Moldova is a neighbouring country of the European Union and NATO. The controlled chaos, orchestrated from the Kremlin, significantly weakened the position of Ukraine itself. And the radicalization of what we call the hybrid war against Moldova happened after 14 December of last year, when the Council of Europe decided to start negotiations between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union and Ukraine and the European Union about joining the European Union,” said the deputy.
He is convinced that if Moldova implements effective steps towards integration into the European Union, the Kremlin will lose the chance to control and hold it, to use the left bank of the Dniester against Moldova’s sovereignty.
Nantoi noted that in this situation, the aggravation of the hybrid war is taking place. Thus, on 21 April, Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor, sentenced in absentia in Moldova to 15 years of imprisonment for bank fraud, announced in Moscow the creation of the “Pobeda” political bloc.
“I call them Putin’s brown shirts, who have the task of serving as a kind of “Wagner” political group to destabilize the situation in the Republic of Moldova. Putin’s regime cannot even dream of changing power in Moldova through fair elections. That is why Putin’s regime is betting on a coup d’état in the guise of mass protest and for this purpose it uses its agency, the most aggressive part of which has come to light in Moscow. And a certain Ilan Shor, together with two ladies from this group, even sat at the Red Square on 9 May with symbols of Russian fascism, St. George’s ribbons stuck to their chests,” Nantoy emphasized.
According to him, the rest of the fifth column is still waiting in Moldova. At the same time, the authorities of Moldova do not agree to play the role of a docile sheep led to the slaughter and we consolidate society.
“We have strong support from the European Union and Romania. We are in close communication and partnership with Ukraine. Therefore, this year promises to be hot. The Putin regime wants to disrupt the referendum on changing the Constitution of Moldova and wants to disrupt the presidential elections. But they won’t succeed,” Nantoy is convinced.
