On 25 August 1991, the results of the struggle of generations for independence were legally confirmed – the Verkhovna Rada granted the Declaration of State Sovereignty the status of a constitutional law. The session was convened at the request of deputies from the BPF opposition, who were joined by other democratic deputies (in total, 84 deputies spoke in favour of the convocation) and worked on 24-25 August.
The Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada proposed an agenda of two issues – “At the current moment” and “On the Union Treaty”, the BPF opposition submitted a package of proposals, the main ones of which are the declaration of independence, the question of the responsibility of the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada for inactivity during the days of the putsch, and the prohibition of the VKP-CPSU about creating their own army. Before the beginning of the session, a group of deputies from the BNF had time to conduct a live telecast and called on the citizens of Minsk to come to the square in front of the Government House.
Thousands of people gathered in the square. As a result, the communist majority was forced to agree with most of the proposals of BNF deputies. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Mykola Demyantei, has resigned, and the activities of the CPSU-CPSU have been suspended. Finally, the Declaration on State Sovereignty of the BRSR received the status of a constitutional law — Belarus legally became an independent state. A few days later, the process of recognition of Belarus by the countries of the world began – yes, at the beginning of September, the Svaboda newspaper reported that Poland recognized Belarus as an independent state.
A few weeks later, in September 1991, the Verkhovna Rada decided on the name of the country (instead of the BRSR — the Republic of Belarus) and granted the white-red-white flag and coat of arms the status of state symbols. weapon “Chase”. “We should remember and celebrate with great respect all the events related to the struggle and assertion of our state independence,” said Zyanon Pazniak, the head of the BNF Opposition at the time. – First of all, it is 25 March 1918, a holiday that we celebrate as Freedom Day and the Declaration of Independence of the BNR.
This is 27 July 1990 – the day of the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence of the BRSR, which was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada as a result of the successful use of Gorbachev’s policy and, above all, thanks to the intelligent and self-sacrificing struggle of the BPF Opposition deputies in the Supreme Council. This is finally – the crown of all events – the achievement of real independence of Belarus on August 25, 1991.”
Long live Belarus!
