Russian opposition figure Leonid Volkov, who lives in Lithuania, called Ukrainian soldiers and officials “Nazis.” The country’s migration service will decide whether to extend his residence permit.

Details: We are referring to statements published the day before, specifically correspondence between Volkov and a representative of the Russian Volunteer Corps in the Ukrainian army, in which Volkov spoke disparagingly about Denis Kapustin, the commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps.

In December, Ukrainian military intelligence staged his death, a man wanted by Russia, and the operation became public in January. In correspondence, Volkov rejoiced at Kapustin’s “death.”

“In a sense, denazification has indeed taken place. The Nazi, whose very existence was a gift to Kremlin propaganda, is dead,” he wrote.

He also referred to the then-head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence, Kirill Budanov, as a “disgusting provincial political technologist.”

“I hope that Kapustin’s friends will follow him. (Andriy) Yermak will be imprisoned, (Mykhailo) Podoliak will be imprisoned, Budanov will be imprisoned, and all the other propagandists and hypocrites will be imprisoned. And then Ukraine will have a chance to win. But while it is built on cabbage, no one will look at it,” he said.

After these messages were published, Volkov apologised for the letter, which he called “emotional and harsh,” and reiterated that he condemned “neo-Nazis.”

On Tuesday, 6 January, the Lithuanian Migration Service contacted the country’s State Security Service for additional “consultation regarding a possible threat to state security and requested an assessment of the foreigner’s statements that appeared in the public domain.”

The Lithuanian Law on the Legal Status of Foreigners provides that a temporary residence permit may be revoked if a foreigner’s stay in the country poses a threat to state security, public order or public health. The Chairman of the Lithuanian Foreign Affairs Committee, Remigijus Motuzas, stated that after assessing Volkov’s applications, the country’s services must decide whether he can continue to stay in Lithuania.

“We will consult with the National Security Committee and other bodies. I believe that this should really be done, and only after that should a final decision be made on whether Volkov can reside in Lithuania, in the European Union, or not,” he said.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budris, in turn, noted that individuals who do not support the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and defence needs of Ukraine “have direct consequences for the national security of the Republic of Lithuania.”

“Lithuanian citizens, and especially foreign citizens residing in Lithuania with one status or another, who have a residence permit in Lithuania or asylum, are expected to show due respect and support for the fundamental provisions of Lithuania’s national security,” he added.
