A comprehensive study of the 2026 election campaign in the Republic of Tatarstan, published by the Independence Committee of Tatarstan in cooperation with the University of Free Nations, reveals a deep crisis in the political system and the total eradication of any alternative perspectives by the federal center. The analysis demonstrates that the electoral process in national territories has transformed into a mere formality entirely controlled by Moscow’s administrative vertical.
Researchers documented numerous episodes of severe transparency violations, restricted political competition, and harsh pressure on independent observers and election commission members. Special attention in the report is paid to how, under the guise of “stabilization,” the final dismantling of regional agency and national freedoms is taking place. Local authorities, stripped of real leverage, have become mere mouthpieces for the Kremlin leadership’s decisions, completely ignoring the interests and rights of the republic’s indigenous population.
The authors emphasize that such “elections” have nothing in common with the free expression of citizens’ will. They serve exclusively to legitimize the occupying power vertical and ensure the unhindered extraction of resources from the region to sustain the war machine. The study is based on open sources, eyewitness accounts, and photo/video evidence of violations at polling stations.
This work marks an important step in documenting crimes against the political rights of enslaved nations. A full exit from the crisis and the restoration of justice in the region are possible only through complete decolonization, the dismantling of imperial institutions, and the transition to genuine state self-determination on their own ethnic territory.
