Sri Lanka is sending a high-ranking delegation to Russia to identify and repatriate its citizens fighting against Ukraine.

Details: It is reported that members of the delegation will investigate the fate of hundreds of citizens who may participate in the war in Ukraine.
It is noted that the investigation has been ongoing in Sri Lanka since the beginning of May.
Direct speech of the Minister: “The main difficulty is to ascertain the exact number of such persons in Russia. Unofficial data indicate that there are about 600-800 Sri Lankans in Russia.”
Details: According to him, the delegation will include Sri Lankan Defence Minister Kamal Gunaratne, who was previously the ambassador to the Russian Federation.
Reuters also claims that at least 16 retired military personnel have died in Ukraine, according to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence.
According to the publication, former Sri Lankan military personnel have been regularly invited to join Russia’s war against Ukraine for some time. They are promised high salaries and prospects of acquiring Russian citizenship. Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence has repeatedly warned against falling for this scam.
