The Caucasus has always occupied a special place in Russian history. Starting with Ivan the Terrible (Grozny), the Caucasus Mountains, like a magnet, attracted Russian conquistadors, who in the national tradition were affectionately called “land explorers”. The ethnic groups of the North Caucasus were more and more persistently displaced from the fertile lands to the mountainous regions. It was during this long-term military campaign that the Kuban and Teresian Cossack armies were formed.

By inertia, even today, the Russian authorities believe that the best way to achieve a goal in politics and diplomacy is the dictates of force, and not the art of compromises. Afghanistan remained an unhealed wound for those mothers whose sons died in this senseless war, but it did not become a lesson for the Kremlin’s superiors, did not prompt them to draw conclusions (known to anyone who has delved at least a little into the history of mankind) that the people who fight on their land for its freedom cannot be defeated.
