In Karelian sacred mythology, as well as in the everyday life of peasants, the transcendence of the forest is a cosmogonic element connecting Nature and Man.
The main Gods of the forest pantheon are Hiisi and Tapio, they are often found in sacred Runes, lyrical songs, conspiracies and appeals – as a symbolism of dichotomy, the principle of opposition between Good and Evil, Light and Darkness.
The mysterious kingdom of Tapio is called Tapiola, and the gloomy patrimony of Hiisi is called Hiitola, these forest natural hypostases of the existence of energies and entities are other, otherworldly worlds that feed the Spiritual essence of the Karelian people.
